Helping prevent suicide
We can all help prevent suicide. Knowing the myths about suicide can help. Here are three steps you can take that could help save a life:
- Speak up. If you think someone you know may be considering suicide, ask them directly. Don’t worry: If they’re not thinking about suicide, asking won’t plant the idea. When we talk more frankly about suicide, we throw open the curtains of shame and fear. We create opportunities to understand and help. Unsure of what suicidal behaviors look like? Learn the signs at MentalHealth.gov.
- Do something. Many people who contemplate suicide don’t really want to die. They need help. Be that help. You can connect a suicidal person anytime, 24/7 with the National Suicide Prevention Hotline at 1-800-273-8255. Trained counselors are always available.
- Learn more. Suicide impacts everyday people, kids, teens and even celebrities who seem to "have it all." Visit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention to learn more about how you can help.
And remember, we’re always here to lend a hand. You can call us for emotional support or on the spot help all day, every day. |
